Inspired by :: I am a thriving artist

Yesterday, two favorite blogs of mine, Scoutie Girl and A Girl and Her Brush, talked about a post by Marissa at Creative Thursday. In that post, Marissa took the negative connotations right out of "starving artist" and made it positive by instead choosing to be a "thriving artist". Tara at Scoutie Girl then followed up with a post encouraging artists to value themselves, and Wendy at A Girl and Her Brush wrote about not letting limitations hold you back in creative endeavors.

I love all three sentiments, and agree with them 150%.

I've been thinking about this idea of a thriving artist since last night. I love the idea that it's in my control to determine how I perceive myself, my work, and my fellow artists. I love the idea that "starve" and "artist" aren't mutually exclusive. But I especially love the positive message.

When I jumped in and started my business, I was in a dark place emotionally. I was suffocating and desperate to find joy again, and I didn't recognize my life or myself in the mirror. After a rough year last year, I was pretty close to being back in that dark place. I questioned what I was doing constantly. I could feel the negativity leaking out of me.

And then I got a wake up call. Several, actually, and I realized I was going through the motions. I realized I wasn't actively engaged in what I was doing. I had stopped looking for inspiration, for motivation, because I had started believing that I really was going to starve if I kept on my current path. I had goals, but wasn't doing anything to meet them, and I hated that. I had to reengage. I had to make a conscious choice to thrive, not starve. I forgot my motto: It's my life, if I don't like it, I can change it. Only this time, I didn't change my life, I changed the way I was thinking, and it feels like I've got a new pair of eyes. It feels wonderful, like I'm hitting my stride and coming into who I want to be.

Marissa encouraged her readers to find a way to thrive as an artist. Tara encouraged her readers to declare themselves as thriving, not starving. Wendy said don't let limitations stop you, and I'm saying if you don't like it, change it. Engage in the world around you, both offline and online. Find something you love and run with it. And, maybe most importantly, don't give up.

My favorite line from Marissa: "I will close by saying that I for one chose a career as an artist expecting to THRIVE."
