Week 31 :: Packaging Wraps Tutorial

As promised, here's how to make your own packaging wraps! It works best on smaller boxes, and doesn't need a whole lot of time or supplies.

What you need:

1. A jewelry box or smaller gift box. You can find these at your local craft store in a variety of sizes, but these instructions work best with a box whose height and width multiplied by 2 add up to less than 12 inches. For example, the box I used is 3.5 inches wide and 1 inch in height, or 9 inches around.

2. 12x12 inch scrapbooking paper.

3. Adhesive squares, double-sided tape, or a glue-stick. Glue sticks work better than craft glue because the paper doesn't warp.

4. Scissors, a paper cutter, or an Xacto knife.

5. A ruler.

Step 1: Measure and cut your scrapbooking paper into 1.5 inch wide by 12 inch long strips. Then fold about an inch of one end over. Don't worry about exact measurements - it really doesn't matter, so long as you have enough paper to wrap around the box with some overlap.

Step 2: Wrap the paper strip around the box, pressing down and folding it around the edges to give you the basic shape of the box.

Step 3: Use your glue stick and glue down the flap you folded (#1). Then put glue on top of the other end (#2) and stick them together. If you're worried about fit, slide the strip back over the box and then glue the ends down.

Step 4: Slide your new wrap on the box, add a decorative sticker or label, and you're good to go! This is a really basic wrap, with lots of places for personalization. You can eyelets, buttons, grommets, ribbons, whatever you can think of. You can also cut the paper with fancy scissors for scalloped edges, or move the flap to the center or back - it's really up to you.

Color Story :: Flower Fields

These gorgeous photos are courtesy of Christie over at The Blooming Wildflowers Project. Christie is a jewelry designer, a blogger, a photographer, and an MFA student. She recently took a vacation to California (I'm jealous) with her husband, and has been sharing the photos she took over on her blog. I was really taken with these flower fields on her Day 1 post, and Christie's allowed me to use them as this week's Color Story inspiration (thanks Christie!). I never get tired of flowers.

I'm still working out where I want to go with the Color Stories, but I've got a few ideas. In the mean time, this is probably a good time to mention that a couple weeks ago, I signed on to write for Handmade Spark.

Handmade Spark delivers useful and innovative information to handmade buyers and sellers. Our key goal is to introduce buyers and sellers to each other.  Additionally, we aim to inform people about the latest handmade trends, showcase the people and work that make up the handmade community, and educate sellers about promoting and buyers about finding great handmade goods all across the Internet.

I bet you're really surprised to see me use this color, huh?

The posts I've done so far are called Color Spark Palettes, where I choose one color then browse Etsy to find six items with that color to show off. I have fun doing it, though I honestly don't know how they fit in; most of the other articles are tips and helpful how-tos, so I'm not sure how long I'll continue with those palettes. I'll be sharing some of my Tip Shares with Handmade Spark, so keep an eye out. If you'd like to stop by and say hi, that'd be great, too. :)

And before I wish you a merry weekend, I also want to let everyone know that my shop will be closed from Tuesday, April 6th to Tuesday, April 13th so I can spend some time with my family. When it reopens, I'll have brand new pieces to share!

Fashion, Design & Lifestyle Etsy Team Shop Launch.

Fashion, Design and Lifestyle is a team I joined on Etsy where the goal is "to unite similar minded enthusiastic artistic people, who are passionate about style, fashion, life and good taste in every step of their daily lives."

In this team, we will be developing our skills and also working on projects together... very exciting! The first project is in conjunction with tomorrow's official launch of the FLDteam Etsy shop, where the theme is 'Debutante Ball' and the colour palette is turquoise and red. I couldn't find the time to do something for this (which I am very gutted about!) but I have already spotted some beautiful pieces! Here is a sneak preview! First up are these earrings by laurabailliedesigns, which are real stunners and can already be found here.

She was also recently interviewed on the Fashion, Design and Lifestyle blog which I found to be a great read! Secondly, I have been eyeing up daintycrochetbyaly's Etsy shop for a while now, as she produces the most beautiful crocheted necklaces! .. It was great to see her turquoise and red version of them for the FDLTeam shop which you can find here.

I will keep looking back at the FDLTeam shop to see what other lovelies spring up, and I hope to be able to participate in the next project!
