Fig and Stilton Tart

por | | 0 comments

Fig and Stilton TartOn Christmas Eve, my fiance and I traveled up to his family's home in Alexandria, Va., where I tied on an apron to cook with my future mother-in-law.

Miss Margaret is quite the gourmet cook, but even she had never tackled puff pastry and invited me to join her in recreating the New York Times' Fig and Stilton Cheese Tart for our Christmas Eve feast.

Fig and Stilton TartWe started out by cutting onions in long slices, shaped sort of like parentheses, and I plucked sprigs of rosemary.

Fig and Stilton TartI also crumbled a wedge of Stilton blue cheese -- very, very creamy.

Fig and Stilton TartMeanwhile, the onions slowly caramelized in butter and sugar for 30 minutes, before I added sherry vinegar to pull up the brown bits. *We would have used more sherry vinegar than the recipe calls for.

Fig and Stilton TartMiss Margaret has a bountiful fig tree outside that yields so many green figs, she gives them away to restaurants. They were very ripe and had been frozen, so they were practically oozing. She sliced the figs in half while I was crumbling the cheese.

Fig and Stilton TartOnce the onions were finished, we placed them in bowls with an egg mixture, then, using a fork, placed the onions in the center of a sheet of thawed puff pastry, leaving an inch to create a border.

Fig and Stilton TartSeriously. How gasp-worthy beautiful is that tart? Gotta love natural light, something my apartment has never seen.

Fig and Stilton TartThen we both brushed the remaining egg mixture along the sides of the pastry.

Fig and Stilton TartThe most fun part: pinching the corner up around the center.

Fig and Stilton TartFinally, we popped them into the oven to bake. Fair warning: the egg will spill a little, so we had to do a little clean-up after that, but Miss Margaret said it would be just fine.

Fig and Stilton Tart
Ta-Da! And I helped!

In all seriousness, the tart was a masterpiece in terms of loveliness. It was maybe the most gorgeous, magazine-worthy item I've made.

Flavor-wise? Well...that's a bit of a different story. The recipe said it could be served fresh out of the oven or at room temperature, so we put some plastic wrap over it and left it out for half the day, then tried it as an appetizer. Room temperature was not so great; it definitely needs to be at least warm.

Also, we would have added some salt or more Stilton to counteract the sweetness of the ripe figs; the flavor of the cheese got a little lost. The consistency of the puff pastry was great, however, and the onions tasted just right.

TitleCourgette, goats cheese & toasted pine nut tart recipe by Gizzi Erskine

Pastries are one of my favourite things to eat, but generally they are fairly heavy and not so hot for your waistline. This tart uses minimal pastry and is rammed full of zingy summer flavours that are lighter on the lips. Make it for supper and use the leftovers for work.

It's Here!!!

It's Here!!!Friends, thank you for taking this journey with me! Our wedding weekend officially starts today and I couldn't be more excited. For those of you who have spent countless hours g-chatting with me and figuring out the perfect option for every single aspect of the wedding, to the bridesmaids that have flown all over the east coast for showers and bought gorgeous dresses, thank you.

These past eleven months of being engaged have been such a special time with Mr. SE, certainly not void of hiccups (but who's engagement isn't?), and we're so happy to have reached the finish line.

This is what our next couple days look like:

Today
MassageFinish assembling seating chart (which I CAN'T wait to show you)
Cookout for family and friends at our house

Friday

Bridal Luncheon
Check into hotel
Rehearsal/Rehearsal Dinner

Marry the love of my life!

And for my sweet, wonderful Nashville bloggy friends who are attending the wedding- I cannot wait to see you on Saturday!

Signing off for the last time as MISS Sarah Elizabeth!

LOST in Translation V.11

por | | 0 comments

LOST in Translation V.11I'm not even going to bother with my requisite spoiler warning. If you haven't watched it yet, I'm sorry, ya'll.

I wanna say something upfront: I love Hurley. I do. But I felt like, if anything, Tuesday's episode made me angry with the writers. SO many things in this episode seemed like the conclusion paragraph of a hastily written research paper: "In conclusion, that's why this happened and how people felt about it and it was a big deal."

I mean, could the revelation about the whispers have felt any more anticlimactic? Things I hated about that moment:
  • It involved Michael, possibly my least favorite character on the show ever.
  • It didn't really explain why the whispers always came right before Others popped up. Were they warnings?
  • Can the other "in-betweens" see each other? Are they talking to each other? Is this like Thornton Wilder's "heaven" in "Our Town"?
  • Why can Hurley see them now if he couldn't before? He's always been able to see dead people, so how come this was a magic moment? Did he not see dead people on the island before? What changed?
But anyways. Let's recap the big stuff, shall we?
  • Wowza, there goes Ilana in classic Arzt fashion, circa season one. I'm really disappointed we didn't get more about her backstory. Was she as old as she looked? How was she recruited? That felt very unfinished. What I did like about it was Ben's theory: maybe when the Island is finished with people, it's really finished.
  • Hurley = The New Locke? Hurley started acting kind of exactly like Locke at the end of season 2 when he started sabotaging any and all plans to get off the island. It's intriguing when we consider that we still aren't sure who's good and who's bad, Jacob or the MiB? Is Jacob sending the dead to have post-mortem chats with Hurley, or are they coming of their own accord? Who the freak knows.
  • Blow Up the Plane vs. Don't Do It: I can't seem to give a crap about whether they blow up the plane or not. I feel like the Man in Black would have left the island a long time ago if all he needed was a plane.
  • The Well: I liked the tidbit about the well, where Flocke told Desmond that the people who built it were trying to figure out why their compasses would spin. I did NOT like the part where he shoved Desmond in the well, but at least we know he lives on to next week.
  • Desmond vs. Locke vs. Jack: WTF, Sideways Desmond? Why are you running over pseudo-happy Locke? Oy. But I liked that kind of delicious moment between Jack and Locke when they met again. It's hard to remember they hadn't seen each other since before Jack became a grizzly bear alcoholic who insisted Locke was right and THEY HAD TO GO BACK, KATE!!! But of course, this isn't Locke, and in a lot of ways, this isn't the same Jack. It's hard to think of them as the same old foes, since one of them, we know, is a little more powerful than mere mortals.
I'm still with them and I still trust this story will unfold as intended. I just thought this episode was super weak. Sure, it was nice to see Hurley finally get his mack on with Libby. But it didn't have the delicious peal-back-the-onion-layers that the Richard and Desmond episodes had. Sigh.

Honeysuckle: The "IT" Color for 2011

Honeysuckle: The "IT" Color for 2011

Honeysuckle: The "IT" Color for 2011

Last year's Pantone color of the year was turquoise because of its calming effect (much-needed after a tumultuous 2009). This year, they're forecasting a way more vibrant color: Honeysuckle! According to Pantone Color Institute Executive Director Leatrice Eiseman, “In times of stress, we need something to lift our spirits. Honeysuckle is a captivating, stimulating color that gets the adrenaline going – perfect to ward off the blues." It's already been on the red carpet and it's showing up in various of shades of cute items right now!

It looks a lot like Raspberry to me!
