The SE's Have an Outing

The SE's Have an Outing

The SE's Have an OutingSometimes I like to leave my bronchitis cave and make a public appearance. This weekend was no exception. Mr. SE and I flew up to Baltimore for the wedding of Mom & Dad SE's goddaughter. Amy was an absolutely beautiful bride, and her husband was moved to tears her entire walk down the aisle. Most touching wedding moment to date: best man reaching out and patting back of groom as he's crying, watching his bride walk down the aisle. Holy waterworks! Mom SE did a reading in the wedding and she did very well, despite being incredibly nervous beforehand. Amy wore the most classic, timeless dress- she looked like Grace Kelly or Audrey Hepburn (you'd love it Mrs. Smith). My pictures came out awful- but hopefully you can get a feel.
The SE's Have an OutingThe reception was held at Washington Golf and Country Club- hello fancy! Cocktail hour was on a covered portico overlooking the green. I had a hard time keeping Mr. SE from trying to get down there and play (yes, in the rain). This wedding was so perfect to me. I would've been incredibly happy to just cut and paste myself and Mr. SE into it. The SE's Have an OutingAnd because I know you luuurrrve the detail shots...The SE's Have an OutingThe SE's Have an Outingall anonymity just went out the door...The SE's Have an OutingAnd if there's any males reading this- perhaps this will keep you interested. Please don't write a rude comment since I assumed only guys play golf. Actually, I play golf. And it's my blog, so I don't need a disclaimer. The SE's Have an Outing

Board #444: Sparkle and Bubbly

Board #444: Sparkle and Bubbly

Here's another thing I'm trying to remember as a bride: don't take yourself so seriously. Have fun with the whole thing - I mean, it's a party! Parties are fun! Pick up some bottles of bubbly, some packets of confetti, and get some of your favorite folks together - it can be as simple as that! Add some brightly-hued macarons, and you've got a modern take on the traditional cake and punch reception. In that spirit, and inspired largely by Chloe Aftel's wonderful polaroid, I created today's wedding inspiration board in a sweet lavender and gold palette, with playful details and a bit of humor. Champagne coupes flecked with gold stars add even more sparkle to fizzy libations. Gold polka dots are an unexpected addition to a wedding dress, striking the perfect balance between frivolity and sophistication. And I couldn't resist including the pop-up wedding chapel, which is open until December 12 at Grand Opening in New York's Lower East Side. Anyone?

Mood: girly and fun - and a little bit 80s?
Palette: sweet lavender, gold sparkle

Board #458: Orchid & Silver

Board #458: Orchid & Silver

These days I seem to be drawn to lots of neutrals, white flowers, and subdued colors - I apologize to those of you looking for wild or unique color palettes! Today's inspiration board is mostly white and silvery grays - a minimalist palette that allows for more ornate details, like the millefeuille skirt, the ornate silver frames, and the whimsical calligraphy. Things that might seem over the top* in outrageous colors.

(*This is not to say that you can't have both a riotous color scheme and ornate details - it's just more difficult to do so tastefully.)

Mood: simply refined
Palette: winter white, silvery gray (with bits of chocolate torte and orchid leaf)

Top row from left: wallpaper table runner with potted orchids from Wedding Style Guide, potted trees from Martha Stewart via This is Glamorous, tiered mini dress from Martha Stewart Weddings
Row 2: gray invitation with calligraphy by Betsy Dunlap, monogrammed chocolate tortes from Martha Stewart Weddings
Row 3: chocolate truffles from Coco Delice, framed photos via Curious Sofa, Mindy Rice bouquet photo by Jose Villa, pocket flower from The Sartorialist

When you're trying to make every single element in your wedding totally original, you're more likely to end up going crazy with DIY projects, or to spend tons of money hiring professionals to personalize everything for you. And if you know this going in, and still want to do it, then go right ahead. For everyone else, focusing on just a few special details should help to save sanity, and maybe even some money. Since simplicity is currently my favorite wedding word, here are some of the doable special details I had in mind when creating today's inspiration board:

- Hire a calligrapher to create your invitation for you, then have them offset printed. They'll look both custom and tasteful, and they won't cost you an arm and a leg.
- Tables are dressed up with a wallpaper table runner (some good wallpaper sources here), and a row of potted orchids. Orchids can get pretty pricey, so look for a nursery near you and find out if you can get a deal for buying more than a few plants.
- Is it just me, or have boutonnieres become as big as corsages? Instead, how about plucking a single flower from your bridal bouquet, and tucking it in to your groom's buttonhole or pocket?
- Display parents' and grandparents' wedding photos in beautiful antique silver frames. It's a lovely, thoughtful touch (and less self-centered than a slideshow or photo display of the bride and groom).
- Instead of paying more for a wedding cake, purchase decadent chocolate tortes from a local bakery and personalize them with monogram stencils and cocoa powder. To continue the chocolate theme, place brioche molds filled with truffles on each table.

Update! I just came across phalaenopsis orchids on the IKEA website for as little as $13 each. They're not available for purchase through the site, but you might be able to find them at your nearest IKEA store.

A Winter Wedding

Mr. SE and I are headed to Atlanta for a evening wedding in January. This is the first winter wedding I've ever attended, and frankly I'm a little stumped with what to wear. I'd definitely like to wear tights and my new Jessica Simpson suede booties/pumps. So here's where I need your help- what would you wear (or have you worn) to a winter wedding? I'd like to be festive and dressed nice, without freezing!

Here's some ideas for the kinds of dresses I'm looking at....A Winter WeddingA Winter WeddingA Winter Wedding

Honeysuckle: The "IT" Color for 2011

Honeysuckle: The "IT" Color for 2011

Honeysuckle: The "IT" Color for 2011

Last year's Pantone color of the year was turquoise because of its calming effect (much-needed after a tumultuous 2009). This year, they're forecasting a way more vibrant color: Honeysuckle! According to Pantone Color Institute Executive Director Leatrice Eiseman, “In times of stress, we need something to lift our spirits. Honeysuckle is a captivating, stimulating color that gets the adrenaline going – perfect to ward off the blues." It's already been on the red carpet and it's showing up in various of shades of cute items right now!

It looks a lot like Raspberry to me!
