We made it!

por | | 0 comments

We made it!
After loading a moving truck in the Austin heat and humidity (if my honey is reading this: you're my hero), and then a three-day drive, we arrived at our new home! Well, our new temporary home - we're house sitting while my mom is away for the summer, which means we have some time to find our own place (and which also means we'll be moving all this stuff again, just not as far). Our kitty is exploring everything, and has discovered how fun it is to slide across hardwood floors. I'm working on some great posts for you, but until I can get those finished and posted, here are some awesome links to check out...

{via Design Crush}

My dream honeymoon spot.

Skywalkers.

Hero supplies for dad.

I'm thinking of going with bangs after the wedding.

Stepford wife gone rogue.

Preserving Van Gogh's palette.

A greenhouse wedding.

You can bet I'll be making strawberry ricotta graham tartlets this summer.

My iPhone wants one wants one, via automatism.

Adding these (totally perfect for summer) beach blankets to my wish list, via {frolic!}.

Inspired by a summer camping trip.

Have a happy Tuesday!

Cookware.com Contest
Well, my lovely readers, have I got a holiday treat for you! The fine folks at Cookware contacted me about doing a giveaway to my readers.

I've never done a giveaway before, but I figured we could try it out and it might be nice to scoop up something you might not have received for Christmas. Here's the deal:

The Prize: You can choose ANYTHING on the site up to $30 as your prize, including the mixing bowls from Paula Deen Cookware shown above. The site has plenty of kitchen necessities under $30, from knife sets to tea kettles to cookbooks.

The Rules: You have one week to leave a comment on this post telling me your cooking- or eating-related New Year's resolution. My personal resolution is to cook a little healthier in preparation for my wedding, but I'd love to hear yours.

Over the weekend, I'll review the resolutions and announce the winner on Monday. Be clever and creative! At that point, I will ask the winner to e-mail me and we'll negotiate the particulars of getting your prize to your doorstep.

Fine print: Unfortunately, the contest is open only to my readers in the U.S. and Canada (sorry faithful fans in Kazakhstan!). Also, I think it's important for you to know I am receiving nothing from Cookware.com. Think of me as a conduit to your happier cooking experiences!

I'll be linking back to this post throughout the weekend for easy commenting. Please only leave one comment and I can't wait to read your resolutions!

venues for weddings Sunday Best v.36

Sunday Best v.36Want to know how I spent my downtime this weekend? Setting and beating scores on Snood! Do you remember Snood? I was obsessed my freshman year of college. This week, Jack Donaghy said he was drinking whiskey and playing Snood on 30 Rock and that was all the reminder I needed. I promptly downloaded the game and have been reliving 2002 for the past two days. For some reason, I was having trouble typing, so you might notice I'm setting my records as "mberAAmber." Yeah, I had a good hearty laugh over it, too.
  • For fans of The Big Lebowski: The dudeth abideth.
  • This Kate Spade dress is near perfect if you've ever coveted Holly Golightly's hot pink dress in "Breakfast at Tiffany's."
  • I totally weeped in my office reading Joanna's birth story.
  • Need an incredibly versatile accessory? Try a furoshiki.
  • Another resource for vintage-style wedding gowns. How come these are all cropping up AFTER I conducted my search?
  • Don't sloppy joe sliders sound like the best fall food right about now?
  • Chalkboards are de rigeur right now, and this heart-shaped one is the cutest.

A Winter Wedding

Mr. SE and I are headed to Atlanta for a evening wedding in January. This is the first winter wedding I've ever attended, and frankly I'm a little stumped with what to wear. I'd definitely like to wear tights and my new Jessica Simpson suede booties/pumps. So here's where I need your help- what would you wear (or have you worn) to a winter wedding? I'd like to be festive and dressed nice, without freezing!

Here's some ideas for the kinds of dresses I'm looking at....A Winter WeddingA Winter WeddingA Winter Wedding

Real Wedding: Wendy & Sean

por | | 0 comments

Real Wedding: Wendy & Sean

Thirteen people were present at Wendy and Sean's June wedding, and that's including the bride and groom! Their intimate and charming ceremony is a great example of how to include children from previous marriages in a second wedding. Says Wendy:

We have three boys between us, from our first marriages, and we both felt very strongly that this wedding wasn't just about Sean and myself, but about our new family. It was a chance for our children to heal from the divorces and to feel safe and secure in our new family. Everything we did was geared towards making it a happy, special day for them.

The day before the ceremony, Wendy and her sons decorated the church inside and out with magnolia leaves taken from trees she had planted when they were born.

A few details from Wendy: For our first "family date," we visited a little church in Amelia where a small battle had been fought during the Civil War. We took Frisbees and had a really fun picnic, plus we got to share a little of Virginia's Civil War history with my sons. It was a magical day and the real start of our family. When we were trying to figure out where we wanted to get married, that little church, Namozine (maintained by the Amelia Historical Society), seemed like the perfect place.

For the wedding, we did a sand ceremony with our boys. Each of us had our own jars of sand, which we poured into a larger jar to symbolize that we are individuals, but joining together into one family. The children took the sand ceremony very seriously and I think that it meant a lot to them. I hope that every time they look at that jar of sand, they will know how much we love them and want to make a happy, secure family for them.

Wishing all the best to this new family! And thank you to Susan Bolling for sharing these charming photos with us.

Homemade Pizza

por | | 0 comments

Homemade Pizza
I did it, you guys. I tried to make something with yeast.

Yeast is one of the most intimidating ingredients in cooking. If you're like me and generally sucked at chemistry, it's frightening beyond belief. I don't possess any real understanding of how any of this stuff works, but I knew the yeast part had to be perfect.

Where was this yeast going? Into my very first attempt (one of many future attempts, I'm sure) at making my own pizza dough! I decided to use a recipe from Deb of Smitten Kitchen.

Homemade PizzaFirst I combined flour, yeast and salt. Easy enough. Although, I have to admit, I had no idea yeast would look like little seeds when I opened the packet.

Then I was supposed to add lukewarm water. People, that seems easy enough, but in hindsight, I believe my water was still too cold. I understand that can affect the yeast...or something.

I then added olive oil and attempted to stir the big mess into a ball and what you see above is what I got. Hmm. Not quite what I pictured.

Homemade PizzaOn a floured surface, I rolled the dough into a ball, but it still wasn't as smooth as Deb's. Any clues, you guys?

Homemade PizzaI put the ball of dough into an oiled bowl and covered it with saran wrap and left it alone for two hours. See how my ball of dough is all wrinkly, like play-doh, rather than smooth? Seriously, what is that?

Needless to say, it grew an eensy bit in two hours but didn't rise as much as it should have. I figured I'd plow ahead anyway.

Homemade PizzaI dumped the ball of dough back onto the counter, covered it with saran wrap and let it sit 20 more minutes. After all that, I went ahead and pushed the bubbles out with the palms of my hands and rolled the dough.

I have to say, the consistency is awesome to feel. It gives, which is so strange and new after baking so many cookies and cakes. I like how pliant it felt, and how easily it stretched.

Homemade PizzaI rolled it into this sort of oblong shape and then placed it on a piece of parchment paper sprinkled with cornmeal. Now, I don't have a pizza stone (but I'd gladly accept one as a gift!), so I had to make do with the pizza pan we already have.

Deb has several recommendations in the entry I linked about making pizza without a stone, if you are like me and don't possess one.

Homemade PizzaI cheated and used pre-made sauce.

Homemade PizzaI decided to keep my first pizza simple and just made a basic pepperoni. I will definitely admit I might have overspiced it; I shook a LOT of Italian seasoning onto that bad boy.

Here's where things get really dicey. Deb suggested broiling pizza to get that lovely blistered cheese effect. One of my guests (we were hosting a movie night) showed up right around then and I immediately got kind of flustered and rushed around a little too much.

I popped the pizza under the broiler (way too close, I realized soon after) and came back to find the top was perfectly cooked but the crust hadn't cooked at all. It was a pretty devastating moment.

I then set my oven to 550 (the highest temp I'm comfortable with) and popped the pizza back in. The crust cooked this time, but not before the top TOTALLY burnt.

Homemade PizzaSo yeah. Kind of a mess.

But you know what's so great about pizza? It's still good burnt. The crust was really flavorful and almost had a focaccia quality; it wasn't perfect but it still had a homemade taste you just can't get from frozen or delivery pizza.

I'm definitely trying this again and soon. Deb has a variation on the recipe that subs white wine for water and adds honey; I think that sounds like the makings of an amazing white pizza.

Crunchy Bran French Toast

por | | 0 comments

Crunchy Bran French ToastIs it ever a good sign when your cooking adventures start like this? Somehow these eggs got completely stuck inside the crate and I managed to break that one just trying to pull it out. What's that about, people? So weird.

Crunchy Bran French ToastI was pulling out the eggs to make Crunchy Bran French Toast for breakfast-for-dinner.

Crunchy Bran French ToastThe process to make the french toast was a little haphazard. I have a very bad habit of not reading ALL the instructions, so I mixed up my egg wash only to notice I was supposed to add orange zest (pshaw!) and some other junk. I was supposed to use an egg white, but I accidentally used the whole egg. Ultimately, I ended up using two eggs, a little milk, vanilla extract and the eensiest bit of orange juice.

Crunchy Bran French ToastMeanwhile, Sean got to work making 4 sandwiches of honey wheat bread and raspberry jam.

On the other side of the kitchen, I was busy crushing bran flakes into crumbs.

Crunchy Bran French ToastLeaning tower of sammiches!

Crunchy Bran French ToastI then dipped the sandwiches in the egg wash, then in a pile of the bran crumbs and fried in butter and vegetable oil.

Crunchy Bran French ToastFinally, I pulled out the confectioner's sugar and dusted the top of the sandwiches, which is really fun.

Crunchy Bran French ToastThe crunchy bran sandwiches were great, and somewhat healthy-ish (or so said the Food Network). The raspberry jam adds enough sweetness that syrup isn't needed, but Sean still poured it on. I'm always looking for new breakfast options I actually like, so this will be a good addition to the repertoire!

Title:Cereal Rap

My pink and fuzzy ode to breakfast cereals. Thanks to Rebecca http://www.youtube.com/user/rebeccawrite for suggesting in the channel comments that I do a song about Cheerios - it was the inspiration! =:0)

-----------
LYRICS:

I wake up in the morning and I'm feeling kinda lazy
My eyes barely open and my head is pretty hazy
My tummy starts to grumble as the hunger takes its toll
Get outta my way I need to get a bowl!

Which friend is gonna join me? I like to make a habit
Of starting my day eating breakfast with a rabbit
trix are for kids and I like em a bunch
I also like kickin it with capn' crunch.
But that's life. What's life? It's a cereal.
Life Cereal - Hey mikey, he likes it!
1..2..3..
***
A is for Apple, J is for Jacks
G I M the dude with the cereal raps
I don't like it soggy it's my crunchy sweet addiction
Some ice cold milk is the perfect contradiction
It doesn't really matter if they're flakes or they're squares
As long as they taste good I don't really care.
Every day I find myself exactly in the mood
for something kid tested and mother approved
***
It's a modern stone age family! They kinda look like rebels
Running around with stone bowls and fruity pebbles.

Next thing you know there's dino, barney, fred
Yabba dabba do ya do ya do ya know instead
I'm looking for something that's magically delicious
I dont' even mind if I dirty more dishes

Gonna tempt your tummy with the taste of nuts and honey
What about raisin bran that's always nice and sunny
With two scoops of raisins I really wanna bite
I could eat those two scoops every day and night.
When it comes to cereal I'm kind of big talker
Especially cookie crisp - I'm an obsessive stalker
A bunch of little cookies that I can't seem to resist
I always seem to add them to my grocery list

But lets not forget about cinnamon toast toast toast crunch crunch
Crunch berries and frankenberry and boo berry and you berry
And me berry we're two berries that are very very
Cheery cheery cheerio o o oh's
But That's Life - What's Life? Its a cereal.
Life cereal. Hey Mikey.

***
Look at all the boxes in the aisle.
Every character has got a cardboard smile.
Do I go for nutrition or for the free prizes?
Look at all the different colored shapes and sizes.
I'm coo coo for cocoa puffs there's really no denying
The sugar in frosted flakes really gets me flying

That breakfast of champions costs a lot of money
And so do the bunches of oats with honey
Boxes getting smaller and the prices hit the top
It's enough to make your wallet snap crackle and pop

Flakes, bran, berries smacks crispies and bunches
I'd rather eat breakfast any day than boring lunches
It doesn't really matter if they're flakes or they're squares
As long as they taste good I don't really care.

Board #492: Love and Surf

I was having so much fun thinking about where my honey and I might go on our honeymoon, and then we found out we might not be able to take one right away. So disappointing! But, one thing inspiration boards are good for (aside from helping to pull together a look for a wedding) is imagining, so I imagined up a trip to Hawaii...
