Mr. SE and I love to cook together. We've done several classes at the Viking School, and we're doing another one this spring (more on that later). While registering at Bed, Bath, and Beyond, we paid special attention to the cookwear that we chose. The debate became heated. I was rooting for the non-stick team, and Mr. SE for stainless. We ended up registering for a little bit of both, but I could tell Mr. SE was feeling a little bit sad. So for Christmas, I decided to buy him the pan of his dreams. The 11" stainless pan from Viking. You should've seen his face light up when he opened it!
Also, it's no secret this man loves some blu-ray! He also loves Dexter, and is still quite upset about the season finale that aired earlier this month. I have a weak stomach, and I don't enjoy CSI-type shows, so he was really surprised when he opened Season 1 and 2 of Dexter.
Of course, I also threw in the obligatory boxers, along with two button down shirts from BR. I think Mr. SE was very pleased with his Christmas gifts this year!
Thirteen people were present at Wendy and Sean's June wedding, and that's including the bride and groom! Their intimate and charming ceremony is a great example of how to include children from previous marriages in a second wedding. Says Wendy:
We have three boys between us, from our first marriages, and we both felt very strongly that this wedding wasn't just about Sean and myself, but about our new family. It was a chance for our children to heal from the divorces and to feel safe and secure in our new family. Everything we did was geared towards making it a happy, special day for them.
The day before the ceremony, Wendy and her sons decorated the church inside and out with magnolia leaves taken from trees she had planted when they were born.
A few details from Wendy: For our first "family date," we visited a little church in Amelia where a small battle had been fought during the Civil War. We took Frisbees and had a really fun picnic, plus we got to share a little of Virginia's Civil War history with my sons. It was a magical day and the real start of our family. When we were trying to figure out where we wanted to get married, that little church, Namozine (maintained by the Amelia Historical Society), seemed like the perfect place.
For the wedding, we did a sand ceremony with our boys. Each of us had our own jars of sand, which we poured into a larger jar to symbolize that we are individuals, but joining together into one family. The children took the sand ceremony very seriously and I think that it meant a lot to them. I hope that every time they look at that jar of sand, they will know how much we love them and want to make a happy, secure family for them.

Forgive me for not cooking anything tasty recently. I've been busy jet-setting (er...car-traveling) all over the place lately, so the best I can offer are pics of some of the delectable treats I've been eating.
This amazing chocolate teacup filled with espresso mousse came from Local Chop and Grill House in Harrisonburg. The restaurant opened in the City Exchange building, a converted seed warehouse, in 2007 and at the time, I wrote an article about the new fancy restaurant. It's since changed its name, its menu and its chef (and possibly its owners!), but all for the better.
When we went, the pastry chef was on her second day and had already schemed up an awesome array of treats for dessert. The mousse was perfect, but I found myself wondering how I could replicate the chocolate teacup. I think I know how to make the handle...but what about the cup itself? Any ideas?
Taking a "sip" of mousse. The musician behind us was hilariously earnest and kinda bad, but at least he gave us something to laugh about.
Serve the chocolate after a meal not too heavy because the mousse is quite powerful. Divide into smaller glasses or espresso cups.

Soak the gelatine 10 minutes in lukewarm water.

Beat the eggs with the sugar until stiff. Most easily achieved with a mixer.

Melt the chocolate and whisk the cream until thick yoghurt.

Pour the Grand Marnier in a saucepan heat a little. Squeeze the gelatin and dissolve well in the Grand Marnier.

Mix the gelatin mixture first and then the chocolate into the egg mass.

Fold the whipped cream in stages by the warm chocolate mixture before. Would this happen at 1 time, then the mixture is still warm and the cream and the egg too quickly in structure.

Let the mousse at least 3 hours to set
