Yes, the wedding day itself is very important. But I feel like people often overlook the rehearsal dinner. Mr. SE and I both have lots of family coming from out of town, and we'd like to spend as much time as we can with them. We put a lot of thought into our rehearsal night, and the feeling that we wanted to evoke.
Those of you who follow me on Twitter know that our rehearsal dinner has been an ongoing battle. We had certain criteria, and finding a place in Nashville wasn't easy. Well guess what? Maggiano's fit the bill and we couldn't be more excited! Let me backtrack a little bit. Here's what we wanted: close to downtown (convenient for our OOT guests), moderately priced, private room for our 50-60 guests, good food (obviously). Oh Maggiano's, how I love you!
I remember fabulous family-style dinners for high school homecoming, along with family New Year's celebrations, and birthdays. This restaurant holds many special memories for me, including FSIL/FBIL's rehearsal dinner in 2007. While these events were all at Maggiano's restaurants, our rehearsal dinner will be at a location that we haven't used before. Their Nashville restaurant! It sits up on a hill by itself, and I just love how it looks all lit up.
Here's a screen shot of the menu that we get to choose from. To say there's lots of choices is definitely an understatement. We're really looking forward to our tasting!

Thirteen people were present at Wendy and Sean's June wedding, and that's including the bride and groom! Their intimate and charming ceremony is a great example of how to include children from previous marriages in a second wedding. Says Wendy:
We have three boys between us, from our first marriages, and we both felt very strongly that this wedding wasn't just about Sean and myself, but about our new family. It was a chance for our children to heal from the divorces and to feel safe and secure in our new family. Everything we did was geared towards making it a happy, special day for them.
The day before the ceremony, Wendy and her sons decorated the church inside and out with magnolia leaves taken from trees she had planted when they were born.
A few details from Wendy: For our first "family date," we visited a little church in Amelia where a small battle had been fought during the Civil War. We took Frisbees and had a really fun picnic, plus we got to share a little of Virginia's Civil War history with my sons. It was a magical day and the real start of our family. When we were trying to figure out where we wanted to get married, that little church, Namozine (maintained by the Amelia Historical Society), seemed like the perfect place.
For the wedding, we did a sand ceremony with our boys. Each of us had our own jars of sand, which we poured into a larger jar to symbolize that we are individuals, but joining together into one family. The children took the sand ceremony very seriously and I think that it meant a lot to them. I hope that every time they look at that jar of sand, they will know how much we love them and want to make a happy, secure family for them.

Buying a diamond ring is one of the biggest investments you'll ever make, so get the most bling for your buck.
To complete this How-To you will need:
Input from the bride and loved ones Knowledge of the four C's: carat, color, clarity, and cut A grading report Negotiating skills Membership in a warehouse store
Step 1: Suss out her taste
Casually comment on someone else's engagement ring; that should prompt her to describe what she likes. Or ask her loved ones for advice.
Step 2: Consider her personality
Take into account her personality and the jewelry she already owns. Does she like modern jewelry, or does she prefer antique and estate pieces? Does she like showy baubles or simple stuff? Is she a traditionalist, or does she strive to be unique?
Step 3: Pick a shape
Pick a shape. Choices include round, square, radiant, emerald, pear, marquise, princess, cushion, Asscher, and heart-shaped. The princess and radiant cuts are more forgiving of flaws than the emerald and the Asscher.
Tip: Beware of buying shapes other than round ones online. Many, like pear and marquise, are prone to certain cutting flaws that are obvious to the naked eye but not necessarily evident from the information contained in the grading report provided by the seller.
Step 4: Think about carat size
Think about the size of the diamond you want—or, more to the point, the size she finds acceptable! Diamonds are measured in carats, one carat being about the size of a green pea.
Step 5: Consider color
Consider color. Color is graded from D (colorless) to Z, with colorless being the most valuable. Diamonds graded N and below are noticeably yellow.
Step 6: Decide on clarity
Decide on the level of clarity you are willing to pay for. The choices range from FL (flawless) to I3 (included). Almost all diamonds have flaws, or inclusions; the trick is to find one whose flaws are least visible to the naked eye.
Step 7: Choose your cut
"Cut" refers to the reflective quality of the diamond. Cut grades range from "ideal," assigned to diamonds that reflect the most light, to "fair and poor," for diamonds that reflect only a small proportion of light.
Tip: The cut is perhaps the most important of the four Cs. A good cut, which is determined by the angles and finish, is what gives a diamond its brilliance.
Step 8: Consider the setting
Consider the setting, which determines the center stone's height. Choices include prong, bezel, channel, pavé, cluster, and flush. A cluster setting, with many small diamonds around the main stone, can result in a tall ring; a flush setting provides a more understated look.
Step 9: Pick a band
Choose which metal you want for the band. Platinum is the most expensive but also the most popular because of its durability. Other choices include white gold, yellow gold, titanium, and palladium.
Tip: White gold needs to be replated every few years to retain its polish.
Step 10: Get a grading report
Before buying a ring, ask the jeweler for the grading report—a certificate filed by an independent gemological lab that confirms the carats, color, clarity, and cut. If the jeweler says he can't or won't get one, walk away.
Tip: Do some comparison shopping. Sometimes a warehouse store can offer the same quality jewelry as a retail shop, at deep discounts.
Step 11: Haggle
Don't be afraid to haggle: You're expected to negotiate when buying an engagement ring. Most jewelry stores mark up their diamonds by a whopping 100 percent, so there's plenty of wiggle room—especially if the salesperson's choice is between a small commission and none at all.

Is it ever a good sign when your cooking adventures start like this? Somehow these eggs got completely stuck inside the crate and I managed to break that one just trying to pull it out. What's that about, people? So weird.
The process to make the french toast was a little haphazard. I have a very bad habit of not reading ALL the instructions, so I mixed up my egg wash only to notice I was supposed to add orange zest (pshaw!) and some other junk. I was supposed to use an egg white, but I accidentally used the whole egg. Ultimately, I ended up using two eggs, a little milk, vanilla extract and the eensiest bit of orange juice.
Meanwhile, Sean got to work making 4 sandwiches of honey wheat bread and raspberry jam.
On the other side of the kitchen, I was busy crushing bran flakes into crumbs.
Leaning tower of sammiches!
I then dipped the sandwiches in the egg wash, then in a pile of the bran crumbs and fried in butter and vegetable oil.
Finally, I pulled out the confectioner's sugar and dusted the top of the sandwiches, which is really fun.
The crunchy bran sandwiches were great, and somewhat healthy-ish (or so said the Food Network). The raspberry jam adds enough sweetness that syrup isn't needed, but Sean still poured it on. I'm always looking for new breakfast options I actually like, so this will be a good addition to the repertoire!
