We made it! After loading a moving truck in the Austin heat and humidity (if my honey is reading this: you're my hero), and then a three-day drive, we arrived at our new home! Well, our new temporary home - we're house sitting while my mom is away for the summer, which means we have some time to find our own place (and which also means we'll be moving all this stuff again, just not as far). Our kitty is exploring everything, and has discovered how fun it is to slide across hardwood floors. I'm working on some great posts for you, but until I can get those finished and posted, here are some awesome links to check out...
I could offer some excuses for where I've been this week (yes, I did forget to do the Sunday Best!), but it was the norm: out of town for a wedding, then two night meetings, no dinners to cook, et cetera et cetera.
But in the meantime, we marked an important milestone: One month away from the wedding, as of Thursday! Wedding planning (and stress) have kicked into high gear and we've reached the point where you just spend money with abandon, keep track of your headcount and field questions from every direction. I'm getting very excited, but there's plenty of hoops to jump through before I can let loose and really just enjoy it. So here's the week in wedding planning:
I had a very successful hair trial! Loves it!
I purchased a garter from this fine lady, even though I'm a little nervous wearing a garter with a short dress.
And I ordered two types of ribbon from Save On Crafts. One of these ribbons will end up on my bridesmaids' bouquets, but I want to see them in person before I make a decision.
Speaking of which, mini rant: have you been to your local Michael's or fabric store lately? They have awful ribbon selections. Seriously! The only place I could find lovely ribbon was the internets or M+J Trimming in New York. Whither the great craft supplies these days?

This is my Westie, Duffie, and she's my princess. I've been her proud Mama since April 2007. When's her birthday, you ask? Valentine's Day of course! She's such a looker, and I'm pretty sure she knows it.
I swear there's a point to this...I entered her in a Twitter contest! There's an amazing dog artist, aptly named Dog Arteest that's hosting a monthly contest to win a free portrait of your pup. Aimee is so talented- her paintings are out of control. I WANT ONE SO BAD. What's better? She does them in 140. The winner is picked by Aimee, so please wish us luck!
Along with monthly contests, Aimee does commission work too. These paintings are more labor intensive, taking up to 30 hours! Here's some images from her recent commissions. Check out Aimee's site for more of her work.

This was just too fun not to share with you - I'm here in Birmingham where I'll be speaking tomorrow at the A Bryan Photo workshop, and I am so excited to be here. I get to hang out with the whole A Bryan Photo team, the awesome Jonathan Canlas, Bill from Richard Photo Lab, Brian from Cypress Albums, and some other really wonderful people. Anyway, I get really nervous speaking in front of groups, so wish me luck with my talk!
Oh, and check in for some pretty posts this week - two engagement shoots and a wedding that I just couldn't keep to myself any longer.
I've been needing a new day-to-day fragrance for a while now. I have a couple of very heady evening-only perfumes, one of which is Givenchy's L'Interdit that my dearly departed grandmother gave me when I turned 17. I'm preserving those last few drops, so I like to have a lighter, easy-to-wear fragrance for daily life. I was addicted to Lavanila's Vanilla Grapefruit, but I used it all up a few months ago, so I think it's time to try something new.
The ad for Kate Spade's new perfume, Twirl, caught my eye in my Vogue last night and I gave it a big, hearty whiff. Hard to tell from a magazine loaded with 15 other perfume samples, but it smelled very me. I like to test-drive perfumes before committing too much, so I'm thinking I might get an $18 rollerball. I'll let you know how it goes!

Tim Gunn, of Project Runway fame, is working with Kate Spade to promote their Spring line and made a stop at their Northpark Center store in Dallas on April 29, 2009. He gave a style show using outfits that "everyone has in their closet" like jeans and a white T-shirt and a little black dress to illustrate his style points - that it's all about the accessories. He showed off the Kate Spade collection which is varied, bright and fun! See Tim's tips here for Spring style.

I've been following the work of photographer Polly Alexandre for awhile now, and today I get to share her beautiful work with you, with Fiona and Niels lovely wedding. As soon as they were engaged, Fiona says that she and Niels knew they wanted a small wedding in their adopted hometown of London, and that's just what they had...
Fiona's 1930's-inspired gown was beaded by hand with Swarovski crystals taken from her mother's wedding dress and Miyuki satin beads. She completed her look with a pair of silver and drop crystal earrings given by her parents when she moved from Scotland to London years ago.
How amazing is this hat! Made by milliner William Chambers, who also made Fiona's gorgeous headpiece.
Guests were treated to a short tour of London before going on to the reception in a red Routemaster bus. Says the bride, "The night Niels and I first met, he insisted on waiting with me for my bus (No. 139) in Bond Street, London. I will never forget the sense of certitude when I got on that bus that I had met someone quite special. So, as a surprise for Niels, I arranged for the red bus to be mocked up as the No. 139 bus."
Fiona describes their ceremony site: "We came across the historical church of St. Bartholomew the Great (built in 1123 AD) long before we got engaged and were struck by its heritage and beauty. Unbeknown to us, the church has played many a starring role in films, including Four Weddings and a Funeral."
"Our reception venue was located on the banks of the River Thames with stunning views of St. Paul’s Cathedral. This restaurant and brasserie is attached to Shakespeare’s Globe and we instantly fell in love with it, not only for the location but also for their ethos of serving seasonal produce in a relaxed atmosphere." Fiona and Niels love to throw dinner parties at home, so this was the perfect wedding reception for them: 38 guests joined them for dinner around one large table, allowing everyone to feel included, and allowing the couple to interact with each of their guests.
The wedding cake was a small square fruitcake. Also, Fiona says, "My mum is famous for her shortbread, so we asked her to make small individual heart shaped pieces for the reception. I forgot to thank her on the day so can I take this opportunity to say thank you so much, Mum!"

Oh, and I just have to share this funny story from Fiona with you: "Niels and I decided to spend our wedding night at home as we live only five minutes from the reception venue and we weren’t leaving for our honeymoon until Monday morning. On arrival at the threshold Niels discovered he didn’t have any keys on him as they 'spoiled the look of his suit.' He had his iPhone with him but no keys!"
Since we've changed our date again (it's official I promise- but more on that later) we won't be needing shawls anymore. But I'm still in love with this image. Perhaps other cool-weathered brides could use this for their guests.

Title: FINDING GOLD XI - Metal Detecting for Desert Gold

Gold and platinum are 15-19 times heavier than other streambed materials and concentrate in low pressure areas and cracks that run across rivers and streams. You look for a crack on the bank, and follow it out until you meet the "gold line" and there you suck it out with your dredge. Gold will be on the outside edge of a river gravel bar, at the head of the bar (large gold but usually beneath big boulders), and at the tail end of a bar (vast concentrations due to river bars forming in the shape of an airfoil and sucking fine gold to the tail end) but be small to microscopic at the tail end. Gold will travel down a river or stream in a line, usually off center of the high pressure water. Gold will settle behind a boulder. A good place to fish, can also be an excellent place to find gold. "Black sand" is iron ore that can be readilly identified in gravel bars and is a ready indicator that gold is probably present. The most effective and economical way for the average person to find paying concentrations of gold in a river or stream is with a simple ($80) sluice that you shovel into and the riffles retain gold, platinum, gems and anything heavy for you. Gold can be found up high on the old river channels and recovered with metal detectors, a gold wheel, a highbanker, or simply by identifying the material, shoveling it in your truck and working it out later in a wheel, or your simple stream sluice. The states which have gold in vast quantities are: Maine, Vermont, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona, California, Idaho, Washington, Montana, and Oregon. The rest have gold as well, some in very good concentrations. All have gems of some kind that a sluice will seperate and hold. Good luck finding the gold of your dreams! Brittany and Michael were married last August in Oregon at Brittany's parents' property. Both Brittany and Michael grew up in Oregon, so the venue was an obvious choice, and since they both loved summer camp as kids, they invited friends and family to come camp out. The bride shared some details about their DIY wedding:
We thought of it as Summer Camp Social. Everyone was invited to camp on the property, and anyone who camped or stayed in town was invited back to the barn for breakfast in the morning. My parents and some family friends made a huge breakfast for our sleepy guests.
We made a lot of things ourselves to save money, but also so we could do everything exactly as we wanted. We screenprinted paper to look like cross-sections of cut logs for name tags, and wrote on them guests' names and how we knew them. We worked within what we had and what we know how to do. Since we can print, we did that. I didn't care about shoes very much, so I wore some old ones. Flowers weren't a big deal either, so we saved a ton of money on those (though I think they looked lovely). We tried to purchase everything from friends and local vendors.

We printed programs on heavyweight paper and glued them onto sticks as fans. I went to the farmer's market the morning of the wedding with my mom and Michael's mom to pick out flowers. I bought flowers for my bouquet and five bridesmaid bouquets all for $20.
I carried a giant ghetto blaster down the aisle, playing "Somebody" by Depeche Mode. That seemed like the only logical solution because we didn't have musicians for the ceremony. Guests said it was kind of neat because they heard the music really faintly at first and it got louder as we got closer.
Elizabeth Dye is so incredible - I wanted a simple cotton dress, and I got the cutest simple cotton dress ever!
I made a giant Oregon backdrop and we left a couple of cameras on tripods outside of the barn so guests could take pictures of each other.
We gave out wooden toothpick holders for favors. They were printed with our names, the date, and a beaver (for Oregon.)
"A bunch of our friends surprised us during the reception by arranging themselves in a long line. They all lifted their shirts up to show Congratulations! written across their bellies."
