Dressing the Men of the Wedding

Dressing the Men of the Wedding

So much time is spent deciding the bridal gown, shoes, and accessories. And if you've ever been a bride, or involved in a wedding, you know the bridesmaid dress selection isn't a walk in the park either. So why make a quick decision and overlook the men who will play a role on your big day? Mr. SE looks guh-or-gus in a tux- like double take levels of handsomeness.

Dressing the Men of the Wedding{in case you wanted to see proof of the hottness}

He knew from the start that he wanted the guys to wear a tux, and I left the rest up to him. Trust and let go, trust and let go. I have to keep repeating it to myself so I don't freak sometimes! What did my handsome almost-husband pick? A winning combination in my book!

If you recall, the bridesmaids are wearing cobalt blue cocktail length dresses. Mr. SE decided that he didn't want his guys in a color, and would instead let the bridesmaids shine (what a gentleman). Here's what he picked. The base is a Calvin Klein tux for all: black vest and tie for groomsmen, white vest and tie for Mr. Groom, and navy vest/tie for our dads. I love it! So classic and beautiful. The men will have boutonnieres of white orchids tied with gold ribbon (from Hillary @ Brocade, in case you forgot). Here's how they'll look together...Dressing the Men of the WeddingDressing the Men of the WeddingDressing the Men of the Wedding

Our rentals are from Men's Wearhouse in Mt. Juliet (I reazlied last year its WEAR not WARE. How cute is that!?!?). Their staff is fantastic and couldn't be more helpful. We love how the guys can visit their local MW to get fitted, and pick them up at the store in Mt. Juliet for the wedding.

LOST in Translation V.8

por | | 0 comments

LOST in Translation V.8LET'S TALK LOST, BUT DON'T READ THIS IF YOU AREN'T READY AND YOU LIVE AND DIE BY DVR!

WHEW. That's about all I can say after last night's BAM-IN-YO-FACE slam dunk of an episode. I felt at the end the same way I felt at the end of "The Constant": like things were making sense, and intrigued, yet confused. But most importantly, excited!

The LOST producers were really winking at us the whole night, with Richard announcing early on that they're all in Hell and Jacob calling his enemy the "Man in Black." I both like that and don't like it; I don't want the producers taking their cues from us! But quibbles aside, let's get on with it.

RICHARD BACKSTORY GREATNESS
That was such a rich backstory with really excellent storytelling, heartwrenching love and loss, questions of faith and more. It was like a Gabriel Garcia Marquez novel or something, which is kind of the beauty of LOST. Because of the backstories and flash forwards, the producers have been able to explore almost every genre: the buddy cop show, the "Bourne Identity" show, the Spanish colonial romance.

I loved most how the backstory humanized this man who's always been stone-faced and passive, especially with his struggle with faith. He starts out a devout Catholic, is told he has no chance at forgiveness by a priest, believes he's landed in Hell, finds out he hasn't, but must now serve as a prophet, only to lose his faith more than 100 years into the gig. It was just very rich and complex and delicious.

Most delicious was his redemption toward the end of the episode, when Hurley found him at his most vulnerable, about to make a deal with the devil. He found his faith again.

EL DIABLO
Ah, the devil references were abundant in this episode. The priest told Ricardo in jail, "The devil awaits you in hell." As the boat of Captain Magnus tossed toward the island, a fellow prisoner shouted "El Diablo!" When Ricardo sees his beloved Isabella in the cargo hold, she tells him they're in Hell.

When he comes face-to-face with the would-be devil (an incredibly sexy Titus Welliver; don't tell me I'm the only one who has a thing for the bad guys!), he tells him, "The devil took my body." Literally, perhaps?

And of course, Jacob tells Ricardo the man he met is a darkness that needs to be kept in, like wine in a bottle.

So this brings us to the most important question: Is the MIB the "devil"?
The evidence is stacked against him. He...
  • Wears black
  • Is incredibly charming
  • Kills people as a black pillar of smoke
  • Possibly appears in the form of lost loved ones
  • Makes offers that are hard to refuse
There was a moment when he was talking to Ricardo in the ship that even I was almost convinced he was in the right. The thought occurred to me: what if Jacob were the devil? What if Jacob took his body, he was forced to inhabit a dead body (as he has with Locke) and has no real body? But how? And why?

Jacob's endless messing with people (who just end up killing each other) and mind games don't make him look too good either...but the same could be said of the Judeo-Christian concept of God, could it not?

And what to make of his plan to kill Jacob, which had pretty much the exact instructions Dogen gave Sayid to kill the MIB? Was the MIB stealing Jacob's line or were Dogen's instructions possibly misguided?

In the end, I was pretty much swayed in Jacob's favor. He makes good sense, and he wears white and is blonde, and in our culture, that means he's probably the "good one." But how does he "bring" people to the Island? Is he God, quite unlike we imagined him? Is the Island the gate to Hell and he, the gatekeeper? Is Widmore the closest thing to a real chosen one, with his electro-charged gates that keep the smoke out?

THE BEST LINES
I'll finish by sharing some of the best lines, imbued with deeper meaning and possible hidden clues:
  • "Verily, I say to unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country." - Luke 4:24, where Richard's Bible lands open.
  • "No one comes in unless I invite them in." - Jacob, talking about the statue. Seems like a lot of people have come in uninvited lately.
  • "He believes it's in man's nature to sin. I bring people here to prove him wrong" and "I want them to know the difference between right and wrong. I have no desire to step in." - Jacob, right before he names Ricardo his "representative."
  • "It wasn't your fault. It was my time. You've suffered enough. We are already together." - Isabella
  • "You have to stop the Man in Black from leaving the Island. If you don't, we'll all go to hell." - Hurley
Lastly, what about Ilana? I get the impression she might be older than she looks, too, due to her intimate knowledge of the island. But what do I know?

Sunday Best v.32
Sunday Best v.32
Sunday Best v.32Just some stills of some movies I've enjoyed lately. I finally got around to watching "Priceless" the other day, a French spin on the idea of "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and thought it was fabulously fun. It was like a modern screwball romantic comedy, my most favorite of genres.

I also dragged Sean out to see "The Kids Are All Right", which shows what happens when kids raised by lesbians are old enough to wonder about the sperm donor, and it was wonderful. I laughed and cried. We also went out to see "Eat Pray Love" which renewed my desire to travel to India. Have you seen any good movies lately?

NY BRIDAL MARKET COVERAGE: Major Drama at St. Pucchi

True to form, St. Pucchi had drama on top of drama walking down their runway. Not to mention the fact that it was their 25th Anniversary. So it was a celebration of pomp and circumstance that epitomize ballroom gowns as ballroom gowns were in Elizabethan times. Big full skirts and embellishment galore, St. Pucchi has the perfect dress for the bride that wants to make that grand entrance.

China Cabinet

por | | 0 comments

China CabinetWhat would we all do without friends who have trucks? Miranda and Travis saved us again this weekend, which was jam-packed with rearranging, decluttering and organizing.

At the rate we're moving, we'll be decorating for Christmas in January. While most people were digging out their ornaments and lights this weekend, we were making messes upon messes in an effort to get organized.

We were fortunate after our wedding to receive many of the things we asked for, albeit without anywhere to put them. Our kitchen cabinets were stuffed to the gills; I had two drawers so full of linens you couldn't really open them.

Once we stuffed all the leftover wedding stuff (centerpieces, decorations, napkins, etc.) into the guest room, we piled the gifts in there, too and suddenly it went from neat and tidy to an episode of Hoarders. And if you saw my collection of empty boxes, that's not far from the truth.

We agreed the solution would be a china cabinet, but to make that happen, we had to move our big IKEA Expedit bookcase out of the dining area and into the guest room. And to make that happen, we had to clean out the guest room. You can see where I'm going with this, can't you? That was our entire weekend.

China CabinetWe bought this Federal-style china cabinet with George Hepplewhite-style drawer pulls off Craigslist. Although the wood is quite pretty, I'm not a dark wood kind of girl, at least not in an apartment that gets almost no sunlight.

I can't paint it just yet, since it's winter (I would totally take the risk if Sean hadn't stopped me), but I wanted to do something to make it a little more me. I sloppily (I'll admit it) lined the back of the cabinet with gold metallic kraft paper I bought at Target. It looks sort of Christmas-y and festive. When I can paint it, I'm thinking white or a whitish gray on the outside, with a blueish gray on the inside, possibly with stripes.

China CabinetI was excited to finally display all my pretty things in one place. The William Rogers silverplated dessert plates came from Plantiques in Newport News; the Wedgwood pieces were my grandmother's and the gravy boat is from Crate and Barrel.

China CabinetThe jadeite cake stand is a new purchase! I spotted it at the Williamsburg Antique Mall (my fave!) and had to have it. The teal pressed glass sundae cups are from there, as well.

China CabinetFor our honeymoon, Sean bought us the creamer and sugar bowl from Heath Ceramics in San Francisco. Their color is more green than you can tell in this picture. The dessert plates also came from Plantiques.

China CabinetAnother new purchase! Zinc placecards from Paper-Source.

China CabinetI was most excited to have somewhere to stash my linens, especially because I just bought a pretty white linen tablecloth in Alexandria, along with a taupe hemstitch linen runner.

China CabinetAnd voila! The only scary part is that the whole thing wobbles a little when we pad by it, so I've been walking very, very quietly. Also, the glass is loose in the right pane there, so that will eventually have to be addressed.

Tomorrow I'll show you some incredibly embarrassing pictures of how messy it got in the guest room. I'm redoing it again, and my goal lately has been to bring more cohesion to my home. I'm trying to prune out my belongings a bit, and repeat colors and patterns. Wish me luck!

Alexandria and Baltimore Eats

por | | 0 comments

Alexandria and Baltimore EatsHopefully I will update about our Thanksgiving eats, but first I want to write a little recap of all the ridiculously AMAZING food I had in Alexandria and Baltimore this weekend. Eating out is my favorite thing (way more than cooking, I have to admit) and boy, did I do a lot of it!

ALEXANDRIA
Sean, my future sister-in-law Katie, her friend Diane and I all went to Cafe Salsa Grill, a "nuevo latino" restaurant with lots of Cuban and Puerto Rican goodies on the menu. I ordered an appetizer of empanadas, which came with a trio, stuffed with seasoned ground beef, marinated chicken and cheese, and spinach and cheese.

They were delicious, especially the chicken, but three wasn't going to fill me up by any stretch of the imagination. So Diane very graciously offered me half of her sandwich, the Pollo el Aioli, which had shredded chicken, cheese, roasted tomatoes, red onions and avocado piled on a grilled French baguette. It was as good as that sounds.

BALTIMORE
On Saturday night, Sean and I went to meet Arthur (his Best Man) and two of his college friends in downtown Baltimore. I had never been to the city before, but I was impressed by the nicer parts of town and gleefully identified spots from "The Wire" in some of the not-as-nice areas we passed.

Arthur took us to Fell's Point (pictured above), a historic area with plenty of great restaurants, bars and shops. We had dinner at Kooper's Tavern, which specializes in glorious, glorious burgers. The tavern even owns a burger truck that travels around the city, making gourmet burgers on the spot.

I had the "Elvis Got the Blues" 1/2 pound Angus burger, with Maytag blue cheese and apple-smoked bacon WITH a side of sweet potato fries AND a Franziskaner Hefe Weiss beer. It was so delicious across the board. I ate every last bite of that burger and ended up splitting my beer with Arthur because I was s-t-u-f-f-e-d. Everyone spent the entire meal oohing and aahing over their burgers.

Later, we stopped into Bertha's Restaurant and Bar, famous for its green "Eat Berthas Mussels" bumper stickers, for a cream ale for Arthur. It's a tight squeeze, so we ended up leaving pretty quickly, but it seemed like a great bar for a small party.

Finally, we crossed the street from Bertha's to get gelato at Pitango Gelato, a very chic, Eames chair-filled gelateria. I got mojito sorbet, which tasted basically exactly like a frozen mojito and wowed everyone at my table. I paired it with white grapefruit sorbet, which was good, but surprisingly peppery, if that makes sense.

All in all, I was very impressed with Baltimore's food offerings and I heartily recommend a night there to all of you.
