Changes

***I would like to thank the following wonderful ladies for providing advice and kind words in my time of intense WPM: Little Miss Southern (I heart our gchats), Future Mrs. Smith (I got my hair cut by Kristen and I loved it), The Thirty Something Bride (Don't even know where to begin- you're probably the coolest person I know), The Answer is You (thanks for the lunch date. Can we have another please?)***

I thought about starting this post with some Tupac lyrics, but it turns out those were a little too intense for this G-Rated blog! Mr. SE and I have been undergoing some changes on the wedding front. To make a long story short- I had a total WPM two weeks ago. Don't know what a WPM is? A Wedding Planning Meltdown. To help aid in the confusion and mass pandemonium that will likely ensue, I've created a chart of sorts.

Things that are staying the same: still marrying Mr. SE @ the Cathedral on August 14, 2010
Things that are changing:
reception venue, COMPLETE theme of wedding, budget

We're much like T30SB & The Candyman, in that this wedding symbolizes not only our love for one another, but we also want to spend time with close family and friends who we are blessed to have in our lives. Intimate, and personal- that's our goal for the big day.

That being said, our guest list right now is at 180. We've looked at all the normal RSVP rates, but ours is a little different. Yes, it's a destination for 90% of our guests. No, it's not too far (ie Caribbean). We have NO CLUE how many people are going to come. The majority of our guests are within a 4 hour car ride or a 2 hour plane trip. That's a whole different issue that I'll save for another post.

Miss SE's rule on budgets: just because you have it, doesn't mean you have to spend it. Can I also add another one of my favorite sayings regarding money? Yes, it's my blog. You can spend a lot of money and still look trashy (Kendra and Hank. Hello?). There it is- I said it.

Mr. SE and I have decided that while my parents are footing the bill for this fabulous wedding, we're not going to lose sight of the real reason this is all happening (we love each other). Because of this, I will here and now take a vow (to you, my faithful readers), that I will keep the important things (Mr. SE and our promises to each other) at the forefront of my planning. Thank you Liza for that one.

So now Mr. SE and I are embarking on a 359 day wedding planning adventure. We are (I am) going to keep an open mind about ideas, and we're going to stay focused on the prize (Mr and Mrs). I can't wait to be his wife, he makes me the happiest lady in the world! Keep reading as we'll start to reveal our new inspiration boards and style ideas (omigosh I know you can't wait. And I can't believe you're still reading at this point). Okay I'll add a picture because blog posts suck without them.
Changes{sufficiently awkward. i love us}

Wino Wednesday: Still Eclectic Tapas

por | | 0 comments

Wino Wednesday: Still Eclectic TapasIn celebration of a recent onslaught of birthdays in our wine club, we ventured to downtown Portsmouth, Va. for a fun dinner. Our original restaurant choice seemed to have shuttered its doors, so we had to quickly find a replacement. Lauren suggested Still Wordly Eclectic Tapas, a speakeasy-inspired tapas restaurant located in the basement of a building on Court Street.

Considering it wasn't our first choice, Still absolutely blew us away. Their drink menu featured all those classic cocktails you never see on menus: Sidecars, Old-Fashioneds and more. I ordered a Moscow Mule which was refreshing and tart and minty deliciousness. A Moscow Mule is made with vodka, ginger beer, lime juice and sometimes, mint. It was fabulous!

Wino Wednesday: Still Eclectic TapasWe ordered a bunch of random items, all of which were delicious. Forgive the horrible flash lighting! These are the pork and ginger potstickers, with spaghetti squash. They were SO GOOD.

Wino Wednesday: Still Eclectic TapasBanana fritters with caramel sauce.

Wino Wednesday: Still Eclectic TapasPumpkin ginger spice cake with coffee ice cream.

Wino Wednesday: Still Eclectic TapasCrab cake!

Wino Wednesday: Still Eclectic TapasBacon-wrapped tater tots with chili ketchup. Also super good.

Wino Wednesday: Still Eclectic TapasAll of us ladies! The birthday girls sweetly received mini Astis from Miranda.

I can't recommend Still enough; we really enjoyed it and the atmosphere was great, too.

O Tannenbaum!

por | | 0 comments

Let me tell you, some of the hardest decisions to make are what should be the easiest.

Sean and I had three options for a Christmas tree:
  1. Use my miniature artificial tree to save money.
  2. Buy a bigger artificial tree, which is bad for the environment, but would be reused for all of the foreseeable future. Also, doesn't need water, doesn't demand vacuuming, etc.
  3. Buy a real tree, which is what both of us grew up doing.
I posed this question to the internets and here are two of the 20 responses I got on Facebook:
  • "Real trees blow. Go with a large fake one, they aren't expensive, they last for years, and best of all they don't flare up seasonal allergies."
  • "Real. It's biodegradeable and it'll smell like Christmas. Even the Apple Store has one. Think about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, there's bound to be one plastic tree up in that mess....."
O Tannenbaum!I decided that since it's my first Christmas with my future husband, my first in our new home and my first in Newport News, we should go with real. I'm here to say: So far, so good. Watering isn't too much to ask and Sean quickly vacuumed up the needles.

We went to Dean and Don's Farm Market on Warwick Avenue in Newport News, which was such a great choice. The trees sold there are farmed in Floyd, Va. and each is tagged with a name and a price. We saw "Carly Simon," "Hannah Montana," "Bullwinkle" and some other fun ones, but we brought home a handsome fir named "Thing 1."

O Tannenbaum! We also brought home a Target pre-lit artificial wreath to hang on the porch door.

O Tannenbaum!I wish I could say decorating was easy. Sean has a bit of a reputation in his family as a Grinch and I think I might have been a bit grinchy for both of us. I'm a very particular, very just-so kind of person, which makes me a terror when trying to trim the tree.

We didn't have enough white lights for a big tree (since I only had lights for a mini tree), so Sean graciously went out to Target to get two more strands. Then he brought those home and we found he'd bought white cord lights, to which I said, "WHITE CORDS? WHITE CORDS? WHO ARE YOU?!" So he went back and exchanged them.

And hours later, after two trips to Target, several breaks to watch a very anticlimactic Amazing Race finale and other distractions, we finished. And may I say, I think our tree is gorgeous.

O Tannenbaum!I set up my new glass jars (to be filled with candy) in front of a mirror with a garland I used to drape on my mantel at my much-missed Staunton apartment.

O Tannenbaum!I trimmed the garland with my IKEA diamond-shaped lights. LOVE them, but I don't love that LED color.

O Tannenbaum! Most of my ornaments are ones I've had since childhood. I dug and dug through the box to find my favorite -- a glass ballerina. So gorgeous.

O Tannenbaum! And we bought Sean an ornament of his very own, one of two on the whole tree. We need to buy this boy some ornaments, stat!

Farmer's Almanac

Farmer's Almanac

Farmer's Almanac
This weekend's weather had me thinking about all the brides and grooms that planned perfect outdoor ceremonies and receptions. We originally wanted , but I couldn't handle leaving that up to chance.
Last week I discovered the high for Nashville in August was 107 degrees (1954). Yikes!!! Hopefully we won't have that type of heat for our wedding! The Farmer's Almanac is always kind of fun to look at for predictions, like a horoscope for weather. I don't really believe in them, but they're definitely fun to read. Here's their outlook for Summer 2010. What's your take- do you believe in the almanac? Were you a weather.com stalking bride, or did you just wait and see what the weather would bring?

INTERVIEW: Julianne Smith Garters

INTERVIEW: Julianne Smith Garters

INTERVIEW: Julianne Smith Garters

INTERVIEW: Julianne Smith Garters

{images courtesy of Sevan Photography (www.sevanphotography.com)}

The smile on her face is indicative of a woman who loves what she does for a living. Julianne Smith is that woman. She recently celebrated the launch of her new collection in DC with a fab party and cupcakes, of course. She was so kind to give The Bridal Wishlist an interview.

INTERVIEW: Julianne Smith Garters
INTERVIEW: Julianne Smith Garters

TBW: What is your name? What is the name of your business?
JS: Julianne Smith; Julianne Smith Wedding Garters

TBW: Tell me a little bit about yourself?
JS: Let's see...I live in Washington, DC with my husband and daughter. I'm a virgo. I don't like change, but I love when things are different. I'm incredibly loyal. I become obsessed with things way to easily. And, I almost always make my own ravioli. Oh and I don't like when the seat is hot from the person who sat there before me.
TBW: LOL

TBW: Why did you get into the wedding business as a garter designer??
JS: Like the obsessive person that I am, I was determined that my friend, Brooke, have the most perfect garter for her wedding. I was given one bridesmaid duty and I didn't want to fail. I couldn't find anything to match Brooke's fun, simple personality, so I just made it myself.

TBW: What is your typical work day like??
JS: I don't have a typical day. I wish I could say this was due to my almost 2 year old. But, no. It is me; I'm all over the place. There is nothing typical about any of my days.

TBW: How do you choose your fabrics and color palettes?
JS: I like to follow wedding trend colors, but then mix the palettes up a little bit. That is what I think brides want and expect from me.

INTERVIEW: Julianne Smith Garters
INTERVIEW: Julianne Smith Garters

TBW: Where do you go for inspiration??
JS: I'm really inspired by anything and everything around me. I love color and jewelry, and people with amazing personal style.

TBW: Do you do custom work? If yes, tell me a little about your custom process?
JS: Most of my wedding garters are custom designed. Brides generally want something in particular to match their personality and their day. My custom process is fairly simple: just tell me what you want/like and I'll try to make it work.

TBW: What is the most unusual design request that you have received??
JS: Here is kind of a cute idea that I haven't thought of before...I just recently received a request to make a headband for an infant to wear on her baptism which would then be saved for her wedding to wear as a garter.
TBW: That is totally a cute idea!

TBW: What advice do you have for brides?
JS: Just have fun! If you aren't enjoying it then don't do it.

TBW: If you could design a garter for anyone in the world, who would it be?
JS: I have no idea...
TBW: I guess that's a loaded question.

Ali (Christina Aguilera) is a small-town girl with a big voice who escapes hardship and an uncertain future to follow her dreams to LA. After stumbling upon The Burlesque Lounge, a majestic but ailing theater that is home to an inspired musical revue, Ali lands a job as a cocktail waitress from Tess (Cher), the club's proprietor and headliner. Burlesque's outrageous costumes and bold choreography enrapture the young ingenue, who vows to perform there one day.

Soon enough, Ali builds a friendship with a featured dancer (Julianne Hough), finds an enemy in a troubled, jealous performer (Kristen Bell), and garners the affection of Jack (Cam Gigandet), a bartender and fellow musician. With the help of a sharp-witted stage manager (Stanley Tucci) and gender-bending host (Alan Cumming), Ali makes her way from the bar to the stage. Her spectacular voice restores The Burlesque Lounge to its former glory, though not before a charismatic entrepreneur (Eric Dane) arrives with an enticing proposal...
