LOST in Translation V.8

por | | 0 comments

LOST in Translation V.8LET'S TALK LOST, BUT DON'T READ THIS IF YOU AREN'T READY AND YOU LIVE AND DIE BY DVR!

WHEW. That's about all I can say after last night's BAM-IN-YO-FACE slam dunk of an episode. I felt at the end the same way I felt at the end of "The Constant": like things were making sense, and intrigued, yet confused. But most importantly, excited!

The LOST producers were really winking at us the whole night, with Richard announcing early on that they're all in Hell and Jacob calling his enemy the "Man in Black." I both like that and don't like it; I don't want the producers taking their cues from us! But quibbles aside, let's get on with it.

RICHARD BACKSTORY GREATNESS
That was such a rich backstory with really excellent storytelling, heartwrenching love and loss, questions of faith and more. It was like a Gabriel Garcia Marquez novel or something, which is kind of the beauty of LOST. Because of the backstories and flash forwards, the producers have been able to explore almost every genre: the buddy cop show, the "Bourne Identity" show, the Spanish colonial romance.

I loved most how the backstory humanized this man who's always been stone-faced and passive, especially with his struggle with faith. He starts out a devout Catholic, is told he has no chance at forgiveness by a priest, believes he's landed in Hell, finds out he hasn't, but must now serve as a prophet, only to lose his faith more than 100 years into the gig. It was just very rich and complex and delicious.

Most delicious was his redemption toward the end of the episode, when Hurley found him at his most vulnerable, about to make a deal with the devil. He found his faith again.

EL DIABLO
Ah, the devil references were abundant in this episode. The priest told Ricardo in jail, "The devil awaits you in hell." As the boat of Captain Magnus tossed toward the island, a fellow prisoner shouted "El Diablo!" When Ricardo sees his beloved Isabella in the cargo hold, she tells him they're in Hell.

When he comes face-to-face with the would-be devil (an incredibly sexy Titus Welliver; don't tell me I'm the only one who has a thing for the bad guys!), he tells him, "The devil took my body." Literally, perhaps?

And of course, Jacob tells Ricardo the man he met is a darkness that needs to be kept in, like wine in a bottle.

So this brings us to the most important question: Is the MIB the "devil"?
The evidence is stacked against him. He...
  • Wears black
  • Is incredibly charming
  • Kills people as a black pillar of smoke
  • Possibly appears in the form of lost loved ones
  • Makes offers that are hard to refuse
There was a moment when he was talking to Ricardo in the ship that even I was almost convinced he was in the right. The thought occurred to me: what if Jacob were the devil? What if Jacob took his body, he was forced to inhabit a dead body (as he has with Locke) and has no real body? But how? And why?

Jacob's endless messing with people (who just end up killing each other) and mind games don't make him look too good either...but the same could be said of the Judeo-Christian concept of God, could it not?

And what to make of his plan to kill Jacob, which had pretty much the exact instructions Dogen gave Sayid to kill the MIB? Was the MIB stealing Jacob's line or were Dogen's instructions possibly misguided?

In the end, I was pretty much swayed in Jacob's favor. He makes good sense, and he wears white and is blonde, and in our culture, that means he's probably the "good one." But how does he "bring" people to the Island? Is he God, quite unlike we imagined him? Is the Island the gate to Hell and he, the gatekeeper? Is Widmore the closest thing to a real chosen one, with his electro-charged gates that keep the smoke out?

THE BEST LINES
I'll finish by sharing some of the best lines, imbued with deeper meaning and possible hidden clues:
  • "Verily, I say to unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country." - Luke 4:24, where Richard's Bible lands open.
  • "No one comes in unless I invite them in." - Jacob, talking about the statue. Seems like a lot of people have come in uninvited lately.
  • "He believes it's in man's nature to sin. I bring people here to prove him wrong" and "I want them to know the difference between right and wrong. I have no desire to step in." - Jacob, right before he names Ricardo his "representative."
  • "It wasn't your fault. It was my time. You've suffered enough. We are already together." - Isabella
  • "You have to stop the Man in Black from leaving the Island. If you don't, we'll all go to hell." - Hurley
Lastly, what about Ilana? I get the impression she might be older than she looks, too, due to her intimate knowledge of the island. But what do I know?

Our Wedding: The Photographs

por | | 0 comments

Our Wedding: The PhotographsAfter the ceremony, our guests toured the Mariners Museum for an hour while we headed outside the museum to take pictures. My photographer, Ryan Burke, and I had plotted out what pictures we hoped to get two nights before the wedding. I can't recommend this enough; we wrote down all the combinations of family/bridal party we hoped to get, along with what detail shots were crucial. For the editing style, we talked about capturing a dreamy quality without making it over-Photoshopped. Ryan aimed to get an "Amelie" look to the pictures, which was my goal as well.

Our Wedding: The PhotographsI asked my bridesmaids to choose their own red dresses from wherever they wanted, for however much they wanted to pay. The only real requirements I had were that their dresses be wedding-appropriate, knee-length and that I have approval before they commit to something. That was to ensure we were all on the same page, and also that one person didn't get a radically different dress.

Many people were concerned that this wouldn't be possible with the color red, which has so many variances, but I think it turned out great! My girls bought their dresses at Nordstrom, David's Bridal and Ross. I asked them to wear gold shoes, as well, which I think are a closet staple.

I wanted my bridesmaids to be comfortable and pretty, but most importantly, I wanted them to look like themselves. I hoped they would be able to express their style while looking somewhat unified, and I wanted them to look gorgeous and chic. I didn't want my friends to look like a sad, unhappy Army in unflattering dresses in unflattering colors that they have no hope of wearing again.

Our Wedding: The PhotographsI ordered heart-shaped balloons off of Amazon, and they arrived on Friday night! I had given up on any hope that they would come in time, but they did, and Miranda had them filled. They were used to guide guests to the venue, then we grabbed a few for pictures.

Our Wedding: The PhotographsThe boys bought their suits at Men's Wearhouse. They were just asked to buy light gray suits, and I thought they looked very handsome. Sean bought their ties, which had a very subtle diagonal check pattern, from the J.Crew outlet store.

Our Wedding: The Photographs
Our Wedding: The PhotographsThe museum has this fake wooden ship outside, and the boys convinced me to climb up there for pictures. It was totally frightening, trying to climb a ladder up onto the deck, and when I was climbing down, I ended up throwing my shoes down the shaft and having to ask Sean to push the layers of my dress down so it didn't go over my head! It was quite an adventure.

Our Wedding: The PhotographsMy bridesmaids' beautiful hairsdos! Sarah made each of us sparkly fabric hairpins, like the one you see in Jamie's hair.

Our Wedding: The PhotographsI had worried that the hour in between the ceremony and reception wouldn't be enough time for my minions to transition the space to party-ready, but it turned out to be plenty of time to take pictures and transform the space.

Next up: The Reception!

I bought them. These babies have been on wedding blogs all over the country, and what's not to love? The color is beautiful, and the frills are so girly and fun. I decided to try a nude-peach"ish" heel with the rehearsal dinner dress from the below post. We'll see if they live up to the hype.

Banana Chocolate Chip Pancakes

por | | 0 comments

Banana Chocolate Chip PancakesSo remember when I said I'm not a breakfast person?

I seem to be in active defiance of that lately, because last night, I decided to make breakfast for dinner!

I'm not so great with pancakes, so I decided to take the easy route and use Bisquick, as shown above.

Banana Chocolate Chip PancakesSean wanted plain pancakes, but I wasn't about to let that happen. I made a batch of chocolate chip pancakes for him, and then added banana to mine!

Banana Chocolate Chip PancakesMan....mushed banana is so hideous. But delicious! Just add mushed banana (more than one, in my opinion; the banana taste was way too subtle) and stir it in with the rest of the batter.

Banana Chocolate Chip PancakesMy pancakes aren't pretty, at all, but they were tasty!

Banana Chocolate Chip PancakesThen I fried up some frozen home fries (are you sensing a pattern? Nothing was from scratch!).

Banana Chocolate Chip PancakesAnd finally, we had some chicken-apple sausage (which was really just okay).

It was so good and I was SO stuffed. Lesson learned: There is such a thing as too many pancakes!

Real Wedding: Brittany & Michael

Real Wedding: Brittany & Michael

Brittany and Michael were married last August in Oregon at Brittany's parents' property. Both Brittany and Michael grew up in Oregon, so the venue was an obvious choice, and since they both loved summer camp as kids, they invited friends and family to come camp out. The bride shared some details about their DIY wedding:

We thought of it as Summer Camp Social. Everyone was invited to camp on the property, and anyone who camped or stayed in town was invited back to the barn for breakfast in the morning. My parents and some family friends made a huge breakfast for our sleepy guests.

We made a lot of things ourselves to save money, but also so we could do everything exactly as we wanted. We screenprinted paper to look like cross-sections of cut logs for name tags, and wrote on them guests' names and how we knew them. We worked within what we had and what we know how to do. Since we can print, we did that. I didn't care about shoes very much, so I wore some old ones. Flowers weren't a big deal either, so we saved a ton of money on those (though I think they looked lovely). We tried to purchase everything from friends and local vendors.

(Brittany's something blue!)

We printed programs on heavyweight paper and glued them onto sticks as fans. I went to the farmer's market the morning of the wedding with my mom and Michael's mom to pick out flowers. I bought flowers for my bouquet and five bridesmaid bouquets all for $20.

I carried a giant ghetto blaster down the aisle, playing "Somebody" by Depeche Mode. That seemed like the only logical solution because we didn't have musicians for the ceremony. Guests said it was kind of neat because they heard the music really faintly at first and it got louder as we got closer.

Elizabeth Dye is so incredible - I wanted a simple cotton dress, and I got the cutest simple cotton dress ever!

I made a giant Oregon backdrop and we left a couple of cameras on tripods outside of the barn so guests could take pictures of each other.

We gave out wooden toothpick holders for favors. They were printed with our names, the date, and a beaver (for Oregon.)

Real Wedding: Brittany & Michael
"A bunch of our friends surprised us during the reception by arranging themselves in a long line. They all lifted their shirts up to show Congratulations! written across their bellies."

Venue: private home in Dallas, Oregon

Bride's dress / hair piece: Elizabeth Dye

Groom's guayabera shirt: Adam Arnold

Custom toothpick holders: Stumpy Originals

Thank you, Brittany and Michael, for sharing your fun wedding with us - what could be better than a camp out with all your favorite people? Wishing you all the best!
